How to measure SEO, AEO and GEO without confusing visibility with leads
A practical measurement framework for search results and AI answers, with a clear distinction between citations and business outcomes.
Measure SEO through indexed pages, relevant impressions, clicks and resulting enquiries. For AEO and GEO, also record when AI answers mention the brand or cite its pages, while documenting the prompt, platform and date. Citations are visibility signals, not proof of traffic or revenue; connect available referral data to actual business outcomes.
Use the terms to describe work, not guaranteed placements
SEO improves how search engines discover, understand and present a website. AEO commonly describes making information useful for answer-based experiences, while GEO commonly describes visibility in generative search responses. Agencies sometimes use AIO for AI optimisation as well. These labels overlap, so a proposal should name the actual work: crawl fixes, clear factual content, structured data, useful sources and measurement.
Google Search Central states that its established SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require a special AI text file or a separate schema type for those features. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet before it can be considered as a supporting link. Eligibility does not guarantee selection, and an AI crawler visiting a URL does not prove that it will be cited.
Separate four layers of measurement
| Layer | Record | What it does not prove | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery and indexing | Crawl access, canonical selection and indexed status | That a page ranks for a commercially useful query | |
| Search visibility | Impressions, clicks, query mix, country and landing page | That visitors are suitable prospects or will convert | |
| AI visibility | Observed citations and mentions with prompt and date | A stable ranking across every user, session or platform | |
| Business outcomes | Accepted enquiries, sales and revenue where attributable | That one page or channel independently caused every sale |
Create a reproducible baseline
- 01
Define the market and question set
Separate brand searches, buyer searches and informational questions. For EmergeScale, Delhi NCR service enquiries and India-wide remote project enquiries represent different needs. Keep a stable core set of questions, record why each matters and avoid choosing only prompts that already mention the brand.
- 02
Save search data by page and country
Export Search Console data using a consistent period and search type. Compare similar periods and annotate site changes, campaigns and seasonal events. Separate branded and non-branded demand where possible. Average position and click-through rate are context-dependent, so examine the query mix before interpreting a movement.
- 03
Document observed AI answers
Record the exact prompt, platform, date, relevant settings and cited URL. Distinguish a correct brand mention from a citation to an unrelated similarly named business. Repeat a consistent sample when useful, but describe results as observations because answers can vary between sessions and users.
- 04
Connect visits to qualified enquiries
Review referral and landing-page data where available, then match it to the agreed lead definition. Keep direct and unattributed journeys visible rather than assigning them to AI by assumption. Ask sales teams what prospects found useful, and record qualitative feedback separately from measured attribution.
Turn the report into a useful next action
When a page is not indexed, investigate crawl access, status codes, canonical signals and content value first. When impressions rise but clicks do not, examine whether the page is appearing for relevant queries and whether its title accurately expresses the offer. When clicks rise without qualified enquiries, inspect the match between the query, page, service area and next step. Each symptom points to a different part of the journey.
For factual mistakes in AI answers, strengthen the source information on the business's own pages and keep genuine external profiles consistent. A machine-readable summary can help readers or tools that choose to use it, but it does not replace crawlable content. Do not invent awards, reviews, addresses or results to make a brand appear more authoritative.
Official guidance and reporting limits
Google Search Central's AI features guidance explains that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in overall Search Console Web performance. Do not describe that aggregate report as a clean AI-only segment. Bing announced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview in February 2026; use the reporting available to your verified property and preserve the tool's stated limits.
Review the current documentation before implementing a reporting workflow: Google Search Central, AI features and your website; Google Search Console Help, Performance report; and Bing Webmaster Blog, Introducing AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools. Record changes in tool coverage so a reporting change is not mistaken for a sudden change in brand demand.
