How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

People increasingly ask an assistant instead of searching. Being the source it quotes is a different problem from ranking first — and a surprisingly tractable one.

The short answer

AI assistants cite sources that state answers plainly, early and verifiably. Pages that lead with a direct answer, use clear headings, publish concrete facts rather than marketing language, and are technically accessible to AI crawlers are the ones that get quoted. Most of this overlaps with good SEO.

Why This Is a Different Problem

Search gives someone ten links and lets them choose. An assistant gives an answer and cites two or three sources. The competition is not for position — it is for being one of the few sources that gets used at all, which is a narrower and differently-shaped target.

The practical consequence is that ranking eighth is not necessarily fatal any more. Assistants draw from a set of retrieved sources, and a page that answers the question with unusual clarity can be quoted even when it is not the top result. That is a genuine opening for smaller sites, and it is the most interesting change here.

The corresponding loss is traffic without a click. When an assistant answers directly, the user may never visit any source. This is real and worth planning for: the value shifts from a visit to a mention, which builds awareness and sends better-qualified traffic when someone does click through.

The honest caveat is that nobody outside these companies knows the selection mechanisms precisely, and they change. What follows is based on the patterns that are observable and on what these systems demonstrably need in order to work at all — not on any claimed inside knowledge, of which there is a great deal circulating and very little that is real.

What Makes a Page Quotable

An assistant needs to extract a specific claim and attribute it. Pages that make extraction easy get used; pages that bury the answer in context do not, regardless of quality.

The answer comes first

State the answer in the opening paragraph, in a form that survives being lifted out of the page. If your first two paragraphs are throat-clearing about why the topic matters, the extractable answer is on screen two and the page is a worse candidate than one that simply answered.

Claims are specific and self-contained

"Most sites see movement in three to six months" can be quoted. "Results vary depending on many factors" cannot. Specificity is what makes a sentence usable, and hedged non-answers are unusable by construction.

Headings are real questions

Headings phrased as the questions people actually ask make it obvious which section answers what. This helps extraction directly, and it happens to make the page better for human readers scanning it.

Facts rather than adjectives

"Founded in 2023, thirty staff, based in Rohini" is citable. "A leading provider of innovative solutions" is not — there is nothing in it to quote. Marketing language is invisible to a system looking for facts.

Structure a machine can parse

Proper headings, lists and tables rather than long undifferentiated prose. The same structural clarity that helps a skim-reader helps extraction, which is why this is rarely a trade-off.

What to Actually Do

In rough order of effort against likely return. The first three are cheap and worth doing regardless of how this field develops.

  1. 01

Check AI crawlers can reach you

Assistants use their own crawlers, and many sites block them by accident or by copying someone else's robots.txt. If you want to be cited, they need access. This is a two-minute check and the most common reason a site is entirely absent from AI answers.

  2. 02

Add an answer-first summary to your key pages

One paragraph near the top that answers the page's central question completely and independently. This is the single highest-return change, and it improves featured snippet eligibility at the same time.

  3. 03

Publish your facts in plain language

Founding date, team size, locations, services, terms, hours. Assistants asked about your business will otherwise infer or confuse you with a similarly-named company. Stating facts plainly is how you control what gets said about you.

  4. 04

    Make your entity unambiguous

If your name resembles other companies, say explicitly what you are and are not. Structured data with consistent identifiers, consistent details everywhere, and a plain disambiguating sentence all help a system resolve you correctly rather than confidently describing someone else.

  5. 05

    Ask the assistants about yourself

Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI overviews for your business name and your main service terms. What comes back tells you what these systems currently believe, which is the only real measurement available and is frequently surprising.

What Overlaps With SEO, and What Doesn't

Most AEO advice is repackaged SEO advice, which is largely fine because the overlap is genuine. These are the places the two actually diverge.

Common Questions

What people ask about AI search visibility.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

It is a real trade-off with no universal answer. Blocking protects your content from training use; it also removes you from the answers these systems give, including answers about your own business. Most service businesses benefit more from being citable than from being absent.

Is AEO or GEO a separate discipline from SEO?

Mostly not, and the industry naming is ahead of the substance. Roughly eighty percent is good SEO practice — clear structure, real answers, technical accessibility. The genuinely distinct part is writing so that a specific claim can be lifted out and attributed.

How do I measure whether it's working?

There is no Search Console for this yet. The practical method is querying the major assistants regularly for your key terms and recording what they say and cite. Crude, manual, and currently the only honest measurement available.

Will AI search destroy organic traffic?

It is reducing clicks for questions that have a short factual answer, and much less so for queries where someone needs to compare, verify or hire. The sensible response is to be the cited source for the first kind and to keep earning the visit on the second.
