And the index fills with pages that are technically distinct and substantially identical, which is the definition of the duplication problem.
The usual approach is to decide which filtered views have genuine search demand and treat only those as real pages. "Blue running shoes" may be worth a page someone searches for; "blue running shoes, size 9, sorted by price ascending, page 3" is not.
Everything else should point its canonical at the unfiltered category, and combinations with no search value can be excluded from crawling entirely. Getting this wrong in the other direction — blocking everything — can hide pages you wanted, so it is worth deciding deliberately rather than applying a blanket rule.
